The Diabetes Sleep Connection

The Diabetes Sleep Connection
as reported by the National Sleep Foundation

A new study suggests that inadequate sleep may prompt development of insulin-resistance, which is a well-known factor for diabetes. The study found that healthy young people who regularly got less than 6.5 hours of sleep a night had greater insulin resistance than people who got 7.5 to 8.5 hours of rest. Dr. Eve Van Cauter, a professor of medicine at the University of Chicago who conducted the study, said, “There’s a real possibility that one of the causes of the epidemic of diabetes is related to sleep habits.” The announcement was made at the annual meeting of the American Diabetes Association.
